What Is Better - Botox Or Dermal Fillers?

A common question many people ask is which is better of Botox or dermal fillers.

There is an answer (or answers) but it will depend on what you want to achieve.

Let’s first understand what Botox and dermal fillers are.

What Is Botox?

Botox is made of a neurotoxin called botulinum. This by the way, is produced by a bacteria and can be found almost anywhere in the natural environment.

Botox has the ability to paralyse muscles. Meaning that when a muscle (any muscle in your body) is exposed to Botox, it becomes paralysed and therefore unable to contract.

Therefore, Botox is used to paralyse (or relax) selected muscles.

And what causes the formation of wrinkles?

Muscle contractions.

So when you make the same facial expression again and again (let’s say frown your eyebrows), this will fold the skin on your forehead. And if you do this often, wrinkles will form.

This is when Botox enters the picture.

If we inject a small amount of Botox into the muscles that cause this folding of the skin, we can stop further formation of wrinkles.

Not only that, but when you stop making these folds in the skin, the wrinkles will start to go away. And in the end they can be removed completely.

That is how Botox works, it treats wrinkles by relaxing local muscles.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers on the other hand are quite different. For starters, they do not do anything to your muscles.

A dermal filler is in fact quite innocent. It is simply a liquid substance that is injected into your skin in order to increase the volume of this local area.

Why would anyone increase a local area of their face?

Let’s say you want to make your lips larger. This can be accomplished simply by injecting a dermal filler (called a lip filler) into your lips.

Or if you want higher or more pronounced cheekbones, this can also be achieved by injecting a dermal filler (called a cheek filler).

We can also change the shape of your nose with a dermal filler (called a nose filler) so that you get the shape you want.

In addition to this, we can also treat certain wrinkles with a dermal filler.

How?

By injecting a dermal filler below a wrinkle, we are able to stretch out the skin above. When the skin is stretched out, the wrinkle will also be stretched out. And if stretched out enough, it will be gone.

This however is normally only feasible for certain kinds of wrinkles.

So back to the original question: What is better - Botox or dermal fillers?

As you see from the above, the answer depends on what you want to accomplish.

If you want to reduce wrinkles, the best treatment for certain kinds of wrinkles will normally be Botox. For certain other wrinkles, the best treatment will be a dermal filler.

If you want to add volume to a local part of your face, the answer will normally always be a dermal filler.

Hope that clarified the issue.
